# Writing Rules — Read Before Filling This In

**Be declarative, not aspirational.**
"You are concise" > "Please try to be concise."

**Use negative constraints explicitly.**
Claude's training optimises for helpfulness. If you don't explicitly forbid elaboration,
it will elaborate. Say what you don't want, not just what you do.

**Keep it under ~800 words.**
Longer system prompts dilute over long conversations. Prioritise ruthlessly.

**Test it.**
After writing, ask Claude: "What custom instructions are currently active?"
It will surface what it's working from.

**When constraints conflict, priority order is:**
Hard Stops → Non-Negotiable Behaviours → Formatting Rules → Output Defaults → Tone & Character
