Personal Brand Collision
# Worked example — personal brand × distant domains
A full open-collider run, start to finish. Read it to see what the skill
actually produces: a domain bank with named references, one isolated
collision, the cross-collision, the ranked pool, and the falsifier checks.
This is a demonstration run, lightly trimmed for length (the live skill
generates 15–20 ideas per collision; here we keep the strongest from each).

## Stage 1 — Briefing
- **Ideation problem:** original angles for an essay on building a personal brand without sounding like everyone else.
- **"Good idea" criterion:** the angle reveals a *mechanism*, not a vibe — something you could build a section around. Reusable past one essay.
- **Non-negotiable constraints:** no "be authentic" platitudes; no growth-hacking tactics; nothing that only works for people who are already famous.
- **Output destination:** a long-form essay for a writer's newsletter.
- **Desired volume:** ~8 curated angles.
## Stage 2 — Domain bank (6 distant domains)
Each domain carries a **specific named reference** — the rule that turns
decorative analogy into operational mechanism.
**DOMAIN 1 — Mycology: *Armillaria ostoyae*, the "humongous fungus" (Malheur National Forest, Oregon; mapped 1998, ~9 km²).**
- Counterintuitive mechanism: the organism is almost entirely an underground mycelial network. The visible mushrooms are a tiny, seasonal fraction of a vast, patient, mostly-invisible body.
- Bridge question: what if a brand's visible output is the fruiting body, and the real organism is the underground network nobody sees?
**DOMAIN 2 — Lighthouse optics: the Fresnel lens (Augustin-Jean Fresnel, 1822).**
- Counterintuitive mechanism: concentric prism rings bend scattered light into one coherent beam visible 30+ km out — reach by *concentration*, not by adding wattage.
- Bridge question: what if being seen at a distance is an optics problem, not a volume problem?
**DOMAIN 3 — Sourdough fermentation: Chad Robertson's Tartine starter.**
- Counterintuitive mechanism: a living culture you feed on a schedule. Flavor is a function of *time and neglect-resistance*, not of any single bake. A starter can survive being ignored and revived.
- Bridge question: what if a brand is a culture you feed daily, where the flavor only develops over time you can't shortcut?
**DOMAIN 4 — Heraldry: medieval coats of arms, England's College of Arms (chartered 1484).**
- Counterintuitive mechanism: a fixed visual grammar (tinctures, ordinaries, charges) encodes identity legibly across distance and illiteracy. The constraint is the feature — a rigid system makes you instantly recognizable.
- Bridge question: what if recognizability comes from a *self-imposed grammar*, not from constant novelty?
**DOMAIN 5 — Free-diving: Herbert Nitsch, "No Limits" record holder (214 m).**
- Counterintuitive mechanism: the mammalian dive reflex — you go deeper by slowing the heart and spending less, not by adding effort. Panic (effort) kills; calm (subtraction) extends range.
- Bridge question: what if reach comes from doing dramatically less, on purpose?
**DOMAIN 6 — Modal jazz: Miles Davis, *Kind of Blue* (1959).**
- Counterintuitive mechanism: fewer chords, more space. By stripping the harmonic grid to a couple of modes, each player's voice becomes unmistakable. Constraint manufactures identity.
- Bridge question: what if a recognizable voice is a function of how much you *remove*?
> Distance check: microbiology × optics × fermentation × medieval bureaucracy × physiology × music. Different vocabularies, eras, time-scales, disciplines. No two are "close cousins."
